Finally closed in!

It's been an interesting almost four weeks living in our house. Yesterday we finally had the garage doors put in. Ben spent a lot of time researching products with which to oil/seal the cedar doors to avoid them turning grey at the first sight of sunshine. A marine-strength product was found and lovingly applied. They look great! And today we got the last three panes of glass for the windows. We no longer sit having dinner with a gale blowing through! We now have permanent power connected, so no overloading the temporary power system when I plugged in the iron and the kettle at the same time. Although we still have cabling to complete, we have various plugs wired up around the house so we can have proper lights on, we no longer need to traipse through to the garage to reach the fridge as it's sitting where it should be in the 'kitchen'. The kitchen is a long way off, but we have a great BBQ and Ben the chef is in his element! The rainwater tank was filled in two days, and we've had plenty of rain recently so no shortage there! and power once again means we can operate our flush toilet (albeit minus seat, and open to the whole house). We have a clever septic system whereby a family of worms and beetles enjoys the fruits of our daily ablutions, and the byproduct is clear water which is fed through pipes underground to irrigate what will eventually be lawn and orchard. We also have hot water, most of which being heated with the solar panels on the roof. We are still sleeping in the office, so I don't have far to go to start work! Despite the lack of insulation and external cladding we are warm and toasty, and it will only get warmer. Each morning we are woken at 6am (and getting earlier) by the alarm call of a song thrush singing his heart out from the rooftop - that's at least where it seems to come from. What a way to wake up! The interior of the house is still very much a building site - with just the timber frame walls, concrete floor and roof trusses visible. The next tasks are to finish all the cabling for TV, power, telephone and lighting, then plasterboard the walls, put in the insulation, and fix and render the external Hebel cladding. Oh, and we do need to tile and fit out one of the bathrooms so we can take a shower - currently done at various neighbours and leisure facilities! It's all coming together slowly, and we do have to pinch ourselves to remember that whatever and however long it takes to complete we are now actually living here in our dream home!

What a brilliant life ! I'm so jealous. If I show this to Joey he'll want to drop everything and get out to you tomorrow.
Have a cold one for us here in Bristol, as we head into a British winter.
